Session Title:

Eurosong 2008 Belgrade on VMware VDI

Session Abstract:

On May 2008 we had Eurosong 2008 song contest in Belgrade Serbia. More than 40 countries participated. (with a few tens of milions TV audience!).
National Radio Television of Serbia was host of this big event. RTS decided to build press center IT suport based on a mix of more than 400 PCs, of which 200 virtual desktops for journalists and participants.
Coming Computer Engineering, Belgrade - VMware VAC partner, was choosen to build the whole infrastructure.
Coming put the whole press center on VMware VDI (239 virtual machines!).
Shortly infrastructure consists of:
VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterpris Edition (six hosts), VDM 2.0, HP c7000 blade infrastructure (six BL 480c with 2 quad core 3.0 GHz Xeons and 28 GB RAM), NetApp FAS 2020 storage (two systems with mirroring and deduplication options), and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server servers (10) and more than 220 Windows XP virtual machines.
For clients we use 200 Wyse V10L thin clients.
The whole infrastructure was connected to Internet using HP ProCurve and Cisco network equipment with two 100 Mb/s links.
Eurosong solution was stable for more than four weeks, getting cudos from press, organizers and others.
The system was operating on less than a half CPU capacity (60 GHz out of 148 GHz total, similar for RAM).
NetApp and HP had very nice cases studies already published.
At present equipment and VI3-VDI infrastructure serves RTS production, with all machines repurposed and running reliably.
National Radio Television of Serbia based on this success plans to extend VDI infrastructure to more than 1000 users.
